Notes

Emma Worbey was baptised on 27th December 1850 at Hitchin in Hertfordshire. The family lived at The Riddy, a group of cottages surrounded by fields to the south-east of the town itself. In 1870, Emma had a daughter called Clara. Clara's baptism record gives her parents' names as "Edward & Emma Worbey", but it is clear that Emma was not married at the time, although the "Edward" could be a clue as to Clara's father's identity. Emma and Clara appear in the 1871 census living at The Riddy with Emma's sister Fanny and her family. In 1875 Emma had a son called Walter, for whom no father's information is given on his baptism. On 24th November 1877, aged about 27, Emma married an agricultural labourer called James Brazier. He was from the neighbouring parish of Great Wymondley, but by the time of their marriage they were both living at Charlton, a hamlet to the south-west of Hitchin. They went on to have four children together between 1878 and 1886. The 1881 census finds the family living at Charlton, with Emma working as a straw plaiter. James died in 1887, aged 36. Emma's youngest child was only one year old at the time. After James's death Emma continued to live at Charlton with her children, appearing there in the 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses. She supported herself working both as a straw plaiter and a laundress. Emma died in 1924, aged 73. She had been a widow for over 36 years.
