1939 Register lists living at "66 Sunnyside Road, Hitchin, Herts, England" and working as a Builders General Labourer.

Signed up to Royal Navy (Service No. C/KX 103863) and served as a Stoker Second Class on the H.M.S. Capetown. He was killed in action in 1941 and his war grave is in the Kirkee War Cemetary in India (Plot 4.J.5.)

While deployed at the Red Sea the H.M.S. Capetown was torpedoed and severely damaged by the Italian Motor torpedo boat MAS 213 off Massawa, on 6 April 1941. Seven members of her crew lost their lives.
