James Worbey was baptised on 6th September 1848 at Hitchin in Hertfordshire. The family lived at The Riddy, a group of cottages which stood surrounded by fields a little way to the south-east of the town. In 1856, when James was eight years old, his mother died. The 1861 census finds James living with his father and sister at The Riddy. James's father died in 1865, when James was 16 years old. Two years later, on 6th July 1867, James married Elizabeth Field Burrows. She was from the nearby village of Willian, and they married there. By 1871 they had moved to Willian, appearing in the census that year living on Baldock Road in the village. James worked as an agricultural labourer, whilst Elizabeth was a straw plaiter. Elizabeth and James had nine children together between 1869 and 1888, although one died as a baby. Each census from 1881 to 1901 finds the family living at 11 Lordship Cottages, a four-roomed house on the north side of the main road in the middle of Willian. Elizabeth's parents were living with them in the 1881 census. Some time between 1901 and 1908 the family left Lordship Cottages and moved along the road to Bray Cottages, on Baldock Lane leading out of the village. Elizabeth died in 1908, aged about 58. James survived her by over twenty years. He appears in the 1911 census at 38 Bray Cottages living with two of his sons, a daughter-in-law and a grandson. James died in 1928, aged 79. He was buried at Willian on 26th June 1879.
